A blank page is always a good place to start.
Ah, it feels so good to be writing again. I’m currently writing this blog post from my little Hong Kong apartment and I’m feeling so happy to be doing what I love again. No matter how long I go without putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) I always find myself naturally coming back to it.
How it started
A few years ago I ran my own lifestyle blog and it was my lil’ treasure…but you know how life gets. Balancing a full time job, a social life, and the every day hustle and bustle unfortunately wedged distance between myself and my online writing space. BUT I FRIGGIN’ MISS IT. Since then, it honestly feels like I’ve had a little hole in my life that can only be filled by doing what I love most. Writing.
So here we are. A new era. The birth of The Local Gwei Mui.
About the writer
I’ve been living as an expat in Hong Kong for 5 years now (and counting.) It’s the classic tale of an ordinary British girl, moving away to explore the big city. Cliche, I know. I never originally planned to stay for this long, let alone eventually calling it my home. Hence the choice of blog name. The local Gwei Mui. (Incase you didn’t know, ‘Gwei Mui’ is cantonese for ‘Ghost girl’. A name used to refer to foreigners.) It’s funny to think that I’m a foreigner here, and I always will be. But this place became my home so quickly that I soon overcame my ‘traveller/tourist’ title. I’m not a local but I’m not a tourist. So I kind of combined the two and came up with this name.
What to expect
I’m hoping this blog will be a way for me to share my experience of living as an expat and embracing the local culture in Hong Kong. I always say if life is worth living, it’s worth documenting. That is exactly what this blog will be about. I will document my memories of living in Asia, review my favourite Hong Kong restaurants, offer some useful living or travel tips, share my fun experiences, document weekend trips, share my travel stories, and just about anything else I see fit. A little Hong Kong bubble.
Since closing down my old blog, I’ve always been a bit hesitant of making a new one. Especially when so many people prefer the quick read of an instagram caption or the easy watch of a reel. But that shouldn’t matter. I’m so excited to be back in the blogging world and I’m happy to be allowing myself the joy of writing again. I’ve learnt a lot more about how to run a blog properly now, and believe my mindset is a little more focused than before. 2023 is the year of the blogging comeback baby! I’m so excited! That’s the most important part. If ten people read this blog, five people, one person…hell, even zero…I’ll still be here tapping away with a smile on my face.
I’m delighted you will be joining me along the way to see this blog grow and hopefully enjoy what I have to say. (~Touch wood~.)
