Hello lovelies,
I’m here today to talk to you about an easy and fun side hustle you can do in your free time. Teaching English online with Cambly!
Please note, this is not a sponsored post. I genuinely use this website as a side hustle to teach English online to students around the world.
Before the details get shared, make sure to sign up to Cambly using my referral link by clicking HERE.
(This is a referral link where not only I benefit, but you can too! If you sign up using my link and get approved to teach on Cambly Kids, we both get rewarded $30 USD.)
What is Cambly?
Cambly is an online teaching platform where Native English speakers can teach English to students located all around the world. I have students living in places such as Hong Kong, China, Japan, South Korea, Turkey and many more. Cambly is the main website, where the students are adults. I think this is easier to get approved to teach but I’m not comfortable or experienced in teaching adults, so I use the ‘Cambly Kids’ section of the platform. However, you can choose, and teaching adults can be as simple as just having daily chit chat. I prefer teaching children because it’s so rewarding and you can make such a big impact on their English language learning journey.
Cambly provides all of the teaching material for you. Once you become an approved teacher, you just log in, open your availability, and wait for bookings to roll in. Once you have a booking, you open the lesson and the lesson powerpoint is waiting for you. It’s kind of like Zoom. Very easy to navigate and I’ve never had any difficulties with it.
What is the signing up process like?
Getting approved on Cambly was quite an easy process for me. Saying that, I have a lot of teaching experience online and in person. I also have a 120 Advanced TEFL certificate. These things are not required by Cambly, but these aspects just worked in my favour. The only requirement for Cambly and Cambly Kids is to be a Native English Speaker.
To sign up, you must fill out all of your information on their sign up page and create your profile. Then you will be asked to do a demo lesson. A demo lesson is where you will record a 3-5 minute video of yourself in the Cambly platform. In this video, you have to pretend you are teaching a child. There is nobody there, but they want to see how you would act if there was someone there. They give you some lesson slides to base the lesson off, but since the video is really short anyway you can just introduce yourself and do a few sections from the slides.
Here are some tips to pass your demo lesson:
- Smile!
- Make sure your background is clean (I just used a plain white wall) but some people stick up a world map or some educational posters.
- Wear smart clothes and look professional
- Make sure the lighting is good
- Use headphones if you have them (I didn’t and still passed) but headphones are recommended
- Use props! Prepare some props that are relevant to the lesson slides they give you beforehand. (For me, I had to teach about colours so I just grabbed some different coloured items from around my home)
- Be over animated! Talk very slowly with a super happy voice, use over the top facial expressions, act things out with your hands etc
What is the pay like?
The payment for Cambly Kids is $12 USD an hour. This is NOT a job you can do full time but it’s a great way to earn a little extra spending money on the side. Cambly are actually really good at sending students your way. Every time I’ve logged on and opened up my schedule, I get fully booked. Lessons are 30 minutes long so you have to do 2 lessons to get the $12 USD. It’s an American company so that’s why they pay in USD. They pay via PayPal so make sure to have a PayPal set up if you’re planning to do this side hustle.
Do I have to make any commitments?
You don’t have to make any commitments!
You can choose how often, how much or how little you teach. I am super busy as I have a full time job already in a Kindergarten in Hong Kong, and also have my own private students who I teach at their home. However, if I have any free time on a weekend or during my holidays then I just go onto the Cambly website, open up sone time slots and wait to get booked for classes. If you have more time, then you can of course teach every day if you wished! It’s quite easy to get regular students as if they like you, they will continue to book you in the future.
Overall, I would say Cambly is a great platform to use, especially if you’re just getting into teaching. I’m yet to try other online teaching platforms and I know there are so many out there. However, I am really enjoying using Cambly for now. The pay is definitely quite low but it’s a fun and simple side hustle where you can meet sweet kids from around the world who really appreciate you teaching them.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me. I get so many DM’s about how I teach online which is why I made this post. I might not have time to reply to everyone in depth individually, so I hope this blog post can help you in some ways.
Remember to sign up HERE so we both get $30. It’s a win win!
Thanks for reading and good luck with your online teaching!
